Our History

While we’re known throughout the industry for our commitment to our customers and our drive to provide quality products with a consistently high fill rate, what may not be as well known, is how we got to where we are today, or the man behind the company.

Our story begins in 1980, well before we had state of the art manufacturing facilities throughout China and long before we had thousands of skus of products. It begins with one guy, John Moreau who worked out of his apartment and was “just a guy who knew a guy who bought clocks”. With 10,000 units of car clocks and a strong drive to build a solid reputation and a dream of being an importer, John set out to Hong Kong (during a typhoon, no less) to make his mark.

As with many young, eager entrepreneurs, John quickly learned the hard way about shipment costs and the importance of a strong supply chain. Despite his tough lessons, John ensured that Merangue maintained its vision of providing top rated customer service. He sold to every kind of customer and was hungry to please. In the early 90’s, the business took an important turn when it forged collaborative relationships with major retailers and was now able to focus on items that it could supply to the masses. So was born Merangue’s first series of novelty items and products – the Nature Writers series.

Over the years, while the industry has undergone changes and Merangue’s business has adapted to various market trends and challenges, Merangue has stayed true to its commitment to customer needs and unique, quality products. Working with major retailers such as Loblaw, Sobeys, Basics, Family Dollar and Staples, Merangue ensures that its customers can deliver quality products to the end user. While private label manufacturing is now a significant part of our business, today the company stands as a proud family owned and operated business headquartered in Markham, Ontario, with a consistent dedication to customer care and product development
